August 13 and 14 - Antigua part dos

Image
August 13 - This day, a Sunday, began with a beautiful walk to the outskirts of town. The sky was totally clear for once, and Volcan de Agua was finally fully visible. Nice! In fact, as we got out of the city center, we caught a clear view of Acetenango and Fuego volcanoes. As I set up to take a picture, Fuego belched out a big puff of smoke and ash. Nice one, Earth! We arrived quite early at our destination, Caoba Farms. Yoga was scheduled to start at 10am, but since we had never been there and it was well outside the city grid, I wanted to be sure we left extra time in case we got lost. We did not get lost and it was really pretty close, so instead of 40 minutes as promised by our hostel hosts, it took about 20 minutes to get there. That turned out to be nice because the farm was absolutely beautiful. And, the cafe had just opened and they had really good coffee. So, we relaxed and enjoyed our surroundings while waiting for the Yoga class. Class itself w...

August 10 through 12 - Atitlan to Antigua

August 10 - The day started for me at Mister Mullet's Hostel in San Pedro. I was sad to say goodbye to the place, the town, the lake. But it was time! I took the boat across to meet up with Aleeza in Panajachel. We had a very happy reunion, and then we shared a van with her friends that took us to our hostel in Antigua. By the time we got settled and went back out, it had gotten dark, but already I could see that what everyone has been telling me is true - Antigua is different, it is beautiful, and it is packed with tourists. August 11 - We started our day with a walk to "the hill of the cross." The walk was easy, and in general it is easy to find our way around in Antigua because it is quite compact and it is laid out in a grid. Thanks, Spain. Along the way we passed the iconic arch that is a symbol of the city. The hike up the hill of the cross was easy, and at the top there were all kinds of vendors and people and police to keep it safe. There was ...

August 7 through 9 - Living the Hostel life

August 7 - After the EPIC TREK, I had really no plans other than to be around Lake Atitlan until Thursday the 10th. Several others from the trek were also planning to stay in San Pedro, so after lunch we shouldered our packs and walked the short distance to "Mister Mullet's," where Roy had already booked himself a room in the dorm for one night. The guy at the reception desk, which also is the bar, looked at me and said "look, man, I gotta tell ya because I wanna be honest - this a pah-tee hostel - we gonna pah-tee at night, you know, drinking and stuff. So, you know..." I took that as a challenge and immediately said "cool, I'll stay here tonight." That plus after lugging my pack up the two flights of stairs I didn't really want to hit the street again. I figured I'd stay one night and see how it goes. Anyway, my two nights at the "peaceful, off the backpacker strip" hostel in Tzununa were anything but, as I described in that pos...
